Enlightening Technology: Will Solid State Lighting Brighten Texas’ Future?

With 20% of our electricity being used to produce light, the simplest thing we can do to save electricity and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our home and businesses is to replace our light bulbs. With countries like Australia already phasing out traditional incandescent lights, many new high efficiency lighting systems will begin reaching mass market acceptance. High brightness Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) represent the de facto winner of the new revolution in lighting. With LEDs already being used today in many applications throughout our state from traffic lights, to cell phones, to jumbotron displays, and automobile tail lights, LEDs are on the brink performance to replace every household light.

The latest LED’s are more efficient than compact fluorescent lights, are “instant-on”, dimmable, and could have 10-20 year lifetimes while using 10% of electricity of incandescents and avoiding toxic materials such as the mercury used in fluorescent lights. So SSL is one of the technologies that can impact the global energy balance and significantly reduce energy consumption. There is also a huge economic opportunity for new technologies in the lighting space. The LED market is already $4 billion and expected to grow to $8 billion by 2010 as general lighting and display applications of LEDs take off.

There are many opportunities in Texas for LEDs from developing new light sources, to packaging them, to filling our semiconductor foundries, to reducing our overall state energy load. However, there are many barriers including the cost of a SSL light bulb that prevent wide spread use. This forum will discuss the opportunities that will be created as SSL migrates from niche applications to world wide general lighting.

Please join us and a panel of experts including a leading market analyst, an exec from a leading LED company, an energy investor, a buyer, and start-ups to address the following questions…

  • What are the sales and funding opportunities in the wide spread application of SSL?
What are the technical, supply chain and commercial barriers and development
    opportunities?
How can the Austin and broader Texas business community use our skill sets to take
    advantage of the opportunity?
What impacts could SSL have on Texas’ energy profile and economic base?
How soon will we be turning off incandescent light bulbs and turning on LEDs in our homes?
