Other People's Money: The New Funding Landscape

The funding climate for start-ups has gone through a paradigm shift. Just as the world finally gained understanding of the importance of private venture capital as a force for bringing companies to maturity, the venture model cratered to half its former size. In parallel, in context with the global economic crisis, deficits in major national credit accounts, and a desire for job-inducing federal stimuli, government funding has increased dramatically. Startups today now have much less private capital to seek to fund their startup, but much more government money. Stimulus grants, R&D contracts, SBIR programs, pilot projects, industrial matching programs, investment tax credits, and other sources are now available, creating a volume and variety of public money relevant to cleantech startups that simply wasn’t available a few years ago. Come hear representatives from multiple levels of government and the private venture industry share their perspectives about the new world of funding your startup with other people’s money.
